Every winter people throw out a living plant — and the corm was fine.

As the season cools, Alocasia stops. Leaves yellow, droop and drop, sometimes down to bare soil, and the plant looks finished. Underneath, the corm is alive and holding everything it needs to rebuild in spring. What kills it is not the cold — it is being watered on a July schedule while it has no leaves to use the water. Cold and wet together rot the corm. Cold and barely damp does not.
“A leafless Alocasia in February is not a dead plant. It is a plant you are about to overwater.”
Almost every Alocasia lost over winter is lost that way, and it is entirely avoidable once you know what you are looking at. In Florida, zone 8a and south, the plant regrows from the base on its own.
Thirteen pages, beautifully designed and specific to these fourteen — not generic houseplant advice off the internet.
What triggers it, what it looks like, exactly what to do and what to stop doing — and how the big landscape types behave differently in Florida ground.
Alocasia, Colocasia and Xanthosoma get sold interchangeably as elephant ears. One three-second check separates them, and in Florida it decides whether the plant belongs in the ground at all.
Why they arrive the week the heating comes on, the stippling you can see before any webbing, and the extension-recommended order of treatment.
Calcium oxalate in all parts — and the two exposure routes nobody mentions. What to wear before you divide one.
Corms, offsets and division, step by step — plus the method that circulates everywhere online and appears in no horticultural source.
Light, water, what to watch for, the tell, mature size — including the two you are not legally allowed to propagate, and the one that isn't an Alocasia.
One Alocasia thrown out in February costs more than this guide. Most people have done it at least once, and the plant was alive when it went in the bin. Yours for life, for the price of two coffees.
The dormancy mistake is a one-shot mistake. By the time the leaves have gone and the pot has been kept wet through December, the corm is already rotting and there is nothing to bring back in March. The knowledge is only useful before the plant stops, not after.
