It's not the fruit

The rust-brown marks under a black olive are not falling fruit. A gall mite turns the flower clusters into galls, a caterpillar moves into those galls to feed, and its frass — carrying the tree's own concentrated tannins — is what washes down and stains. On a severity scale that frass rates an eight or nine. Ordinary fruit and leaf staining rates a two.

“The stain on your driveway is not fruit. It is caterpillar frass, and it is preventable.”

Which means it is fixable, and not with anything drastic: two treatments, in two specific windows, about six weeks apart — both of them before the staining season even starts.

What's inside

One tree. One guide.

Nine pages, beautifully designed and specific to this tree — not generic shade-tree advice off the internet.

The four rules it runs on

Sun, water, soil and cold. Everything below ground on this tree is easy — the roots do not even lift paving.

What's actually staining

The full mechanism, named insects and all, and exactly why the fruit takes the blame for something else.

The two treatment windows

What to use before flower buds appear, what to spray at peak flowering, and the calendar the staining season runs on.

Pruning for the tiers

The flat horizontal layers are the reason you bought it, and they do not happen on their own. How to select them — and why shearing ruins it permanently.

Where it goes

Mature size, the drip zone, salt and wind tolerance, and the one temperature that ends it.

In a pot and indoors

Why this is one of very few large landscape trees that genuinely holds in a container — and the answer for anyone north of zone 10b.

The math

One tree, one guide, $12.

A specimen Shady Lady is a serious purchase and the staining is the one thing that makes people regret it. This solves that for the price of two coffees — and it's yours for life.

And the windows are short.

The treatments only work before the staining starts — one before the flower buds open, one at peak flowering in April. Miss them and there is nothing useful to do until next spring, while the marks build on the concrete from April through July. Knowing the dates is most of the battle.
